For once, I have no leftie political brief, but only an observation: what on Earth is the President doing in Washington? It is inconceivable to me that any of the past presidents of the US would not currently be visiting Louisiana and Mississippi. Bill would have gone. Bush 41 would have gone. Ronnie would have gone. Jimmy would have gone.

It is probably true that any President can monitor a situation better from the White House than from whatever makeshift emergency headquarters they have on the Gulf. But monitoring the situation is not the point. People need to know that their leaders are on the spot and doing whatever they can.

Bush has a nasty habit of hiding from awkward facts, like Cindy Sheehan, or just plain hiding, as he was doing before Cindy Sheehan, and as he did after 9/11. But this is just crazy. These people voted for him. Sure, he cut short his unconscionably long vacation, but where's the Presidential helicopter? Where's the photo op?

People need to see their leaders.

Get down there George. One of the major cities of the United States has been devastated. What the hell are you doing hiding in DC?

Not defending him as he is big enough to do it himself, but, maybe he is staying away at present due to the logistics, ie it would take away from the relief effort. It would be nice to say, yeah he can fly down any time, but realistically I dont think air traffic controllers or whoever would want another plane (or the pain) to come down at present.

Had similar situation in Aceh after Tsunami struck, and VIP's kept flying in to inspect the damage and offer support....and it did impede the actual relief efforts by delaying other much needed flights. Also, army personnel had to be diverted to provide security rather than looking for survivors.

Just a thought. Relief first, above all else.
cheers
Dave.

The man is a completely self absorbed moron. He panders to his wealthy "base" and no one else. The people who have lost the most in this are "common" people. Poor people. Not his "base". He doesn't care, has never cared and never will. After all, he's got a life he needs to "get on" with. He probably doesn't want to get his widdle feet wet.

As for your "reasoning", Grubber... I'm not buying. He could fly Air Force One to Fort Polk, LA get on a helicopter and be in New Orleans in less than 2 hours. Plainly, they would be no nedd to arrange security for his motorcade since there's no need for said motorcade as the roads are almost all flooded. He would be forced to take a boat to the worst hit areas. The Secret Service could ride in the boat with him. As for the boat, it's not that difficult to arrange in a city that's a shipping port...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the man is a horrid President. We went from a Rhodes scholar to an idiot. *shakes head*

YEP. The man's a mental giant all right... sooooo not a moron. Right? Riiiigght.

By Blogger writergurl, at 6:08 AM

Bush was too busy to go to Louisiana to survey the damage. Yesterday he played golf, made a speech, then strummed a guitar with the Presidential seal for a photo op. Today he goes to Washington and resume "the people's business."

Calling this man a mental midget is an insult to midgets.

BG, if you're a card carrying Democrat, I'm a lesbian vampire gnome.

Funny.

But, guys, let's not get personal, here. I don't mind political vitriol, but only directed at our leaders, past or present or future.
